About

Citizens coming together to preserve Berkeley’s past and inspire its future.

Save the UA Berkeley is a growing group of hundreds of concerned citizens that began to coalesce after the theater closed in February 2023. Our leadership has a broad range of experience and expertise including historic preservation and operating historic movie theaters.

Our most urgent goal is to rescue the UA Berkeley from being destroyed by the development project that is on the fast track to being approved by the city of Berkeley. This website is part of our campaign to raise awareness among the public, the media, and city leaders about the immense architectural and historical value of this theater, whose resplendent Art Deco origins have been obscured by decades of multiplex retrofits.

We are fighting to PRESERVE, RESTORE, AND REVIVE the UA Berkeley for future generations to enjoy.

For more information, see the Mission, History of the UA, and FAQ sections. Also, please check out our Landmark Application.
